Old Reformed Graveyard

(At the extreme eastern end of Main or German Street in Shepherdstown. The adjoining “Church Hill Cemetery,” bought by the church in 1867, is not here included.

Inscriptions were read by Miss Rosemary Lyne and Carl Jorgensen.

Some burial or death dates have at different times been read as 1720, 1725 and 1728, which seems unlikely. The Reformed Church did not till 1774 acquire by deed of gift from Henry Cookus the church and graveyard lot of one acre, taken from the 165 acre tract he bought from the junior Richard Morgan in 1765. And forty years ago Richard E. Griffith, a recognized authority on early tomebstones in the lower Shenandoah Valley, after a study of the stones here with the death dates read as being in the 1720 decade, said what then and now appears to be a 2 must have been a 9 orginally.

The “in” appearing at the end of several names, variously spelled, such as Hensel, Hentz, Kemp, and Schell, in the German inscriptions, was due to a German custom of using it to indicate feminine gender.)
