Hello world!

Monday, 16 January 2017

During the development of this website I have thought long and hard about what the subject would be for this inaugural posting. What should I say? Should I challenge for the future? Should I speak of the tumultuous times in which we, as Christians, and we as Americans are living?

I have decided on neither of the above. There will be time for those topics in the future.

At this point I only, but not merely, wish to speak of how blessed I am that I am here at Christ Reformed United Church of Christ in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. What started out as a serendipitous call for pulpit coverage has bloomed into a wonderful bouquet chosen from a garden of love, respect, history, humor, caring, and hope.

Christ Reformed (hereafter CRUCC) has a marvelous and rich history. It is a tapestry made up of all the people and pastors, all the talents and gifts, and the myriad strengths, talents, quirks, foibles, and opinions of members past and present. We are merely the latest strands and threads added in.

Never in my wildest dreams and hopes could I have imagined such a wonderful place with such wonderful people that would call me, nurture me, and support me. I want and need to take this opportunity to say thank you. Thank you for allowing me to serve you. Thank you for your generosity and your humor, for your faith and your steadfastness.

And now we journey on together. There will be laughter and tears. There will be differences of opinion on things church-related and secular. There will be difficult and dark valleys to walk as well as mountain peaks bathed in golden light. But I firmly believe that if we keep our eyes firmly fixed on our Lord Jesus Christ  and if we hold on to each other we will come through all of our days and nights together, whole, and blessed. So let us join hands, lift our eyes, and walk forward – striding into a future that assuredly holds surprises and challenges – and, to borrow from Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) – Oh, The Places We’ll Go!

With all my blessings,

Pastor Gayle
